Sun in Leo

As a lion, you let out your roar, Walt Whitman's "barbaric yawp" that inspires and uplifts others. You too are untamed, untranslatable. You do not blend into the woodwork, but rather take over and exude warmth, generosity, with a deep desire to understand others. You are energy, a force that dominates, and at its worst you can be destroyed by a lack of fulfillment.

The Sun is most radiant when it resides in Leo, bringing with it pageantry, ceremony, the creative spirit, and the artist. Both fixed and fiery, impulsive yet stubborn, Leo is wrapped in certainty and absolutes that need expression. Leos frequently find release for their energy on the stage, enjoying the star role, or being the director or writer. In any case, the Leo is a visionary who goes with the flow in a receptive, never relaxed, way. Brilliant, cocky, defiant of authority, Hollywood is full of Leos who strongly emerge with the statement: "I am different! I am me!"

At your weakest you can be too dogmatic, which can be augmented with attention to flexibility. Your sensitivity is a double-edged sword, for you can also be hurt easily. You like to be worshipped, though this may be unrealistic. Your partners must remember that you are the king (or queen). You enjoy being wined and dined, seduced--you enjoy sex. Your expansive nature makes you broad-minded, faithful and loving. This translates into being very ambitious, and you thrive on a career that involves creativity, emotion, and organization. Your natural sense of drama needs to be accentuated. You would be at home in the courtroom, operating a theater--anywhere on stage and in-charge--you make excellent employers. You excel at working with the public, in front of people--an actor, orator, speaker, CEO would all be easy for you. No menial job would do for you. You would also do well at teaching because the classroom becomes a natural stage. Your love extends towards animals as well, and you could enjoy being a veterinarian or dog groomer.

Though money is not the most important thing, you love luxury. Your personal magnetism makes you frequently flamboyant, enjoying all the good things of life. You buy what you want when you want it. Or charge it. Saving is not in your vocabulary, although there are exceptions, especially if Saturn or the Moon were to mix with an earth sign in your chart.

A fixed sign, Leos stand firm in their beliefs. Don't ever argue with one. They can be incredibly arrogant, egotistical, pompous, bossy, with a tendency to get too attached. Because their faith and loyalty are very strong, they need to learn the Zen art of detachment and letting go. They need to not play favorites, but to turn to a higher consciousness in order to transcend their ego, and find a way to connect to all people.

Though they go with the gusto, Leos are not overly gung-ho about change. Always self-critical, they don't rush into any big upheavals overnight. Yet, leisure time is important to them, but it is difficult because they move so fast. Their courageousness must be tempered with responsibility, or they will have difficulty in life. They cry out for discipline. Dominion is also an important word for Leos. They need to learn not dominance over others, but over their own unsubjugated whims.

Leos move with their heart. Extremely affectionate, they are also self- conscious. They have more energy than even the boldest Aries. The most vital sign of the zodiac, Leos exude confidence, which strengthens anyone miles around. Their kingly attitude brings a nobility and aristocracy, ruled by divine right. Their Achilles' heel is that they do not know how to delegate; match them up with a good Capricorn and they are sure to get the job done.

Leo is ruled by the Sun, a dynamic force, but they must learn to become part of a higher will in order to achieve full maturity. In other words, they cannot be a slave to their own ego; they must become a part of Jung's collective unconsciousness, or part of something better than themselves, or they will be in trouble. They need to have an ego that is below God and love. They tend to have big virtues, and big faults. The challenge is to balance both.

A Leo may join a religion out of duty, but he is not likely to stay in one organized religion for long. His greatest contribution is when he expands beyond the parameters of the self and reaches for the universal. Leo's goal is to be the servant to all, with an understanding heart. To this end, no destiny is a higher one, and for a self-actualized, wizened Leo this is all achieved. The flaw is in the ones who reach for the stars, and get caught somewhere in the black hole. They might get lost in their own roar, while others get bowled over. They may love the center of attention, while others get trod upon. To their credit, a Leo stands firm in his or her beliefs, and attempts to stay optimistic, honorable, loyal and ambitious.

A Leo woman is candid, forthright, leaving nothing to mystery. She loves flattery, romantic courtships, and is an ardent lover. Her confidence makes her comfortable in the role of CEO, or some kind of manager. She doesn't like being second, preferring to be on top. In marriage, she is not content to stay home, unless she runs a business from there. She is never JUST a mother--she has a career, hobbies, passions. She likes nice clothes with flair and style. A natural actress, she also rules her children in a direct and warmly dominant way.

Make way for the Leo man, who must be at center stage. Never tell him what to be, or he'll be at his worst. He is so likeable that it is almost impossible NOT to like him--warm, outgoing, fun, all the qualities you really enjoy in people. Kids love him too because, in many ways, he's really full of magic. He is a natural leader and attracts people like a magnet. Honest, with abundant energy and ambition, he has his "court" following, whom he shares with his mate. Once committed, he doesn't let go. He needs distinction and power to command well.

A Leo is well-matched with others with similar energy levels, such as Aries or Sagittarius (also fire signs). Gemini is also good, although the polarity between Leo and Aquarius might help the Leo to transcend himself to humanity and beyond.

In romance, a Leo is very passionate, and can be impulsive, especially when the ego is stroked. They have a need to know they are loved before they can commit entirely. Once committed, everything is bigger than life and brighter than the sun. Courtship is usually dramatic: six dozen roses at your office.

Leos have a natural knack for improvising, but watch out: they can also be fantastic con artists. Their tendency to overreact can be infectious for lovers, with whom they are frequently overgenerous. Watch their motivation--if it's not love they're not true Leos. For real Leos, love energy flows through them and is used to ignite a spark. Others are left to bask in the glow.
